Scenic Overlooks and Picnic Areas
Scenic overlooks and picnic areas provided road-weary tourists with places to enjoy a meal and a pleasurable scenic view. In the early 20th century, vacationers preferred to pack their own meals, as restaurants were thought to serve food of questionable quality. Thus, picnic areas and overlooks were available to assist the motoring public. Most picnic areas have been destroyed by subsequent road-widenings. Scenic overlooks have fared better; they can still be found in locations of natural beauty or historic character. The overlook pictured here is on U.S. 60 in Frankfort. This space furnishes a birds-eye view of the State Capitol and its surrounding natural environs.
