Grant Opportunities

Are you looking for a grant to help with historic preservation efforts?

When a building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, some people assume that this automatically makes the property eligible for restoration grants. While there were more federal grant opportunities when the Historic Preservation Act was first passed in 1966, funding has changed over time. In 1977, the Historic Preservation Fund was created and is still in place today to support a variety of preservation-related goals.

The Kentucky Heritage Council administers a limited amount of brick-and-mortar grant funding through the following program areas:

  • Kentucky African American Heritage Commission - this grant program focuses on African American heritage projects. Find out more here.
  • Certified Local Government program - grants are available to Certified Local Governments through this program, though they focus mainly on educational opportunities.

We also administer programs that offer financial incentives, such as Rehabilitation Tax Credits and others, listed under "Kentucky Specific Financial Resources," below.

Funding opportunities are constantly changing, and we try our best to stay up-to-date on all the opportunities that may be available, but the following list of resources is not exhaustive and is provided to give constituents a head start in their research journey for grants.
