Perryville Battlefield Commission



The commission, established in ​ is responsible for advising on the preservation, interpretation, and management of Perryville Battlefield​, the site of Kentucky’s largest Civil War battle and a National Historic Landmark.​

The Perryville Battlefield Commission ("Commission") was abolished, recreated and restructured on June 1, 2015 (EO 2015-355​) and is attached to the Office of the Secretary, Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet for administrative purposes.

  • ​​The Commission, through advocacy efforts, fundraising and long-term strategic planning, shall recommend ideas pertaining to local preservation efforts; the longterm use of the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site and programs to develop heritage tourism at the battlefield and other historic sites in the region.
  • The Commission shall make recommendations on battlefield park expansion, special events and overall battlefield interpretation.
  • The Commission may receive grants and utilize outside professional services to conduct its business.
  • The Commission shall adopt by-laws to conduct its business and shall submit annual reports to the Office of the Governor.
  • The chair and vice-chair shall be elected by the Commission members at its first meeting. A simple majority of the membership shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business by the Commission. The Commission shall meet at least twice a year or whenever called into session by the chair, or at the request of the Governor, or any two members to the chair.
  • There shall be no compensation for serving on the Commission, but the members shall be reimbursed for their necessary travel or other expenses actually incurred in the discharge of their duties for the Commission.

The Commission shall be composed of fifteen (15) members as follows:

  • ​The mayor of Perryville or his or her designee;
  • The Boyle County Judge Executive or his or her designee;
  • The Kentucky State Senator representing Senate District 15;
  • The Kentucky State Representative representing House District 54;
  • A representative of the Friends of Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site Corp.
  • The Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Parks or his or designee;
  • The State Historic Preservation Officer or his or her designee.
  • The Executive Director of the Kentucky Historical Society or his or her designee.
  • Seven members appointed by the Governor from the state at large.

​​The terms of the appointed members of the Commission shall be for four (4) years following the initial appointments of staggered terms and until their successors are appointed.​
